Goddess, wake not... by Laitma Goddess, wake not... by Laitma
...Lest you drown the world in your tears.

------------------------

One of my favorite parts of Iris was getting to write the "creation myths" of each Demi species in the novel, and this here would be the Mermaid Myth:

"This is the sleeping goddess's tale. This is the story of the goddess who heard a voice while she floated in the blue blue World before The World, when all was only water: this voice told her to create a song, and through the song she sang she created the world, and on this world she created all that lived and died.

"But our goddess did not love us. Though she loved us at first we were not what she wanted: she realized that she was in love with the voice, and she called to it again and again, but all she heard was the echo in the light. In her anguish and her sorrow she drowned the world to silence our noisy ways, but still the voice did not return, and she fell into a slumber. We came back slowly, and kept our noises at a hush, but over time we grew too loud again, and she woke and drowned us again. Three times she will flood the world, always seeking that voice, and the third time she will destroy all life, destroy the world, and all shall return to water, and be no more."

Anyway, been a while since I did a watercolor piece! This one was really rough, and I know there are a lot of mistakes/places where I messed up (her tears, the blotches under her chin, etc), but I'm just trying to take the piece as a whole and appreciate the practice it's given me in working on my watercoloring techniques, and trying lots of new stuff, too! (Another resolution of mine: cut back on the self-deprecation, and stop obsessing over all the little faults!)

Getting to do that milky way/galaxy splatter was fun; I think I'm slowly beginning to figure out washes! : D
And yes I know what this composition resembles but that is purely unintentional okay? Okay good.

~6 hours, Winsor & Newton Cotman Watercolors, India Ink, touch of gouache and white gel pen (<--:heart:).

Oh, and the song that inspired this creation myth: M83 - Moonchild

The creation myth is really really beautiful just like the picture! ^0^
I like the arrangement of it x3 The way the hair fades into the universe is just so beautiful!
How did you draw the universe? QxQ

Ahhhhhhhh, thank youuu!

Ahm, for the universe... I started with dabbing the black into the middle. I used india ink instead of black watercolor, but, in retrospect that was a dumb idea because then I couldn't erase them... xD;
But then I splattered on top of it with masking fluid by flicking a brush! (I almost killed my brush in the process too, whoops hahah!) Then I just did a wet wash and added lots more color for the black/purple/blue of the universe... and when I was all done I rubbed out the masking fluid! That's all! C:

I absolutely adore creation myths, and you don't disappoint with yours! I definitely want to hear the rest of them eventually. :3

Gosh your watercolor technique is just gorgeous--your use of blue in the coloring of the skin looks so natural. How do you even do what you do with watercolors?? THIS SHALL REMAIN A MYSTERY TO ME.

Hahahahah! Ohman doing the research for the creation myths was SO much fun! ...Coming up with them was something between fun and painful, hah..... I got stuck on the others for the longest time.... 9v9;;

And ahm, for watercolors.... I kind of treat them a lot like markers, very dryly? xD

BUT IT'S SO BEAUTIFUL

lol q__q I tried that once too
if you're talking about it getting stuck on your palette pan-- india ink comes off with water if you scrub it I think?? wait for it to dry and then wet it and scrub it really hard... it worked for mine

I love the way you painted her hair and the galaxy. The way her tears are falling does look a little off, though... I feel like they should come from the lower corner of each eye instead of both corners, because real tears would flow along the line made by the lid, not out over the face and then down.

:omg: I can't help but stare at the head on the top. It looks like watercolour. It has that watercoloury texture to it...but I just don't know how you do something like that. The colours and how there's shadows and highlights within them. :faint: The translucency of the tears too! My god...

I think that I also wanted to focus on the head because I couldn't fathom how you did the galaxy too. As much as I couldn't comprehend making that head I REALLY can't comprehend doing something like that galaxy. All those colours! You can see the gases! It's almost like a photo from the Hubble Telescope. :O

Watercolor does some really neat stuff when you just let it run, man! 8O I'm slowly learning how to do washes and work with wetter paper, it's hard for my control-freak nature, but I think I'm slowly getting the hang of it, hahah! xD;

I was watching someone on tv use watercolour and it seemed pretty messy. They seemed to have the attitude of 'the paint will do whatever it wants and I'll just work around it'. :O

Yeaaaaaaaaaah, it's a weird kind of medium to use, and sometimes I want more control, but I'm trying to learn how to let the washes just--work themselves out. xD

This is amazing! I think the way the tears fall across the face is a little odd, but the way they look so clear is awesome!! I would usually recommend observational drawings of people crying, but I doubt you want to go through the trouble of getting someone to cry for you XD

Hahahah, it's alright, I know I really should've gotten myself a reference photo or something for it, but it's really hard to do with watercolors since things only get darker... @v@;;
Thank you! :heart:

God, the strokes of the hair are so lovely! It's a bold stylistic decision for a darker palette, but it joins the picture together so well! AND THE WASHES!! Ah! C: The purple tones are just so flowing and gorgeous and eeeeeeeee

I just love this entirely. Very reminiscent of mother goddess (which is redundant, I know, but it just really does feel like a creation illustration).
